Everyone thought when Durant went to Phoenix they were the favorites to win the championship.
Denver had something to say about that.
There are a lot of lessons / similarities to business if you watched that series. Durant and Booker are phenomenally great players. I take nothing away from them.
Denver is a better team. Why? They’re deeper and have a better bench. Even with Durant and Booker lighting it up they couldn’t carry their team on individual effort alone.
Business is the same way. Early on maybe 1 rock star (CEO / Founder) can carry the business for a while, but eventually you. have. to. build. a. bench. I like to call it BYB – build your bench.
Building a great bench is hard. It takes time. But maybe more than anything else I’ve seen, teams with the best bench outperform those with weaker benches. Businesses with inferior products can win in a market if they have a better bench (blasphemy I know).
Do you have to have great star talent? Sure. Can you only have great star talent? Nope. I’ll expand more on this in the coming weeks, but building a strong bench can be the difference between being a champion or being a runner up.
