If you want your team to be more autonomous so you can pick your head up and get out of the day to day – you have to let your team be more autonomous.
Example – customer emails and reaches out to the CEO because that’s who the relationship was originally established with. This doesn’t scale though. The CEO continues to reply and jump in.
The better thing to do is continue to copy other people in the business and have them reply to the messages. You’re aware, but not actually “doing” the work. Eventually a natural transition occurs.
Think about it. If you could email the CEO and get an answer every time wouldn’t you? It’s not the team doesn’t want to be involved it’s the CEO stays too involved.
Will balls get dropped, sure. Will everything get handled exactly the way the CEO wants. Nope. But, eventually, over time, more and more people in the organization have the ability and competency to handle things without it having to run through the CEO.
