Was It a “good” or “bad” Year?

For many of us a good year is how well our business did. If we hit our targets, busted our quotas, crushed the roadmap, made partner, got that diploma, raised that capital, hired that next level VP, achieved income expectations and / or accomplished what we set out to do then it was a good year.

If the opposite was true, then it was a bad year.

But really, was it? If our identity and how we feel about our year are weighted on business success, was it really a good year? If we didn’t have the success we wanted, was it really a bad year?

I can only answer those questions for myself. I can’t answer them for you. But, speaking from experience, if good and bad is too overly indexed on business, I can promise other parts of your life will suffer. Sometimes that’s where you are in the cycle of the business and it is what it is and you just have to get through it. It’s not good or bad, it’s just reality.

That said, when evaluating my year, I weight my categories appropriately, and business is not the most heavily weighted when evaluating a good or bad year. Took me a while to learn this, but it was a lesson worth learning.
