Demand generation / The measurement decision

More leads.
Or more buying progress?

Demand generation builds relevant awareness, interest and buying intent. Lead generation captures an identifiable response. Qualified pipeline requires more: fit, a real need, sales acceptance and a useful next step.

Separate the jobs
Recognize the problem
Evaluate a way forward
Make contact
Qualify the opportunity

Buyers can revisit or skip steps. This is an operating view, not a guaranteed path.

01 / The distinction

Do not ask a form
to do a market's work.

Create demand
Make the problem and your relevance understandable before a buyer is actively comparing vendors. Positioning, original explanations and sustained distribution serve this job.
Capture demand
Meet an existing buying question with a useful answer, appropriate proof and a clear way forward. Search, relevant outbound, partners and commercial pages can contribute.
Generate leads
Earn an identifiable expression of interest. A submitted form, requested conversation or reply still needs qualification; a downloaded guide is not automatically an opportunity.

When lead volume rises
and pipeline does not.

Inspect fit: are the right accounts responding, and does the offer match a real buying situation?

Inspect the handoff: can sales identify the original request, reach the person and record what happens next?

Inspect the definition: are downloads, clicks and booked calls being counted as though they were qualified opportunities?

Inspect the window: are cohorts observed long enough for your sales cycle, with consistent stage definitions and known source gaps?

Any one of these can change the decision. More acquisition spend is not a diagnosis.

02 / A useful measurement contract

Keep the stages separate.
Connect the records.

  1. Response

Record the actual request and available acquisition context. Unknown or uncollected attribution stays unknown.

  2. Sales acceptance

Agree account fit, relevant need, buying context and the next action. Keep rejection reasons useful and visible.

  3. Opportunity

Link the accepted buying process to its authoritative CRM record. A calendar booking alone does not establish one.

  4. Commercial outcome

Follow won, lost and unresolved outcomes with a defined source and observation window. Invoiced value and collected revenue are different measures.

Do not divide records from unrelated systems by a convenient traffic total and call it a conversion rate.

03 / Follow the work

A connected program
needs a connected business.

Campaigns create the conversation. Revenue operations carries the context, owner and next action. Leadership chooses what deserves investment. The Hourglass Model keeps post-sale value in view rather than ending the picture at a captured lead.
